PS 147 is a small, inner city, Title I elementary school located in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a high-needs area where there are no cultural venues for children. Almost all of the children who attend PS 147 live in housing projects that are across Bushwick Avenue from the school.

Window designed by PS147

This stained glass window was designed by students in the PS147 elementary school.

Through Donors Choose, the Tietz Family Foundation has funded class trips to the Museum of Modern Art and to the Brooklyn Museum. Again through Donors Choose, the Foundation supplied the Art Room with watercolors and watercolor paper, enabling students to support their academic work with painting projects.

In 2007, the foundation purchased materials for a project that was installed in three windows above the school’s main staircase. Two Fifth grade students planned the project. Third grade students were then assisted by Fifth grade students in scaling up the drawing to fit the windows. The Third graders then added color and completed the project.

In the Spring 2012, and again in the Fall, the Tietz Family Foundation made possible an 11-week African Dance residency for two Third Grade classes each school year.
